The term “climate change” is increasingly being replaced by “climate crisis,” which more accurately reflects the critical state of our climate and the severe impacts it has already produced. The continued use of dirty energy is a major source of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, which are key drivers of global temperature rise. Accelerating the transition to new and renewable energy sources is urgently needed, as the Earth’s average temperature is nearing the 1.5°C threshold set in the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, energy transition must not be pursued hastily without considering its potential consequences. The shift toward renewable energy must uphold environmental justice and respect for human rights.
Environmental and human rights activists are often targeted by various actors operating under the banner of development and economic progress. Human rights defenders in the environmental context play a vital role in pursuing justice for communities affected by new policies or industrial ‘development’ projects that encroach upon their living spaces. These defenders face a wide range of threats, including verbal and non-verbal intimidation, digital harassment, and even attempts on their lives or those of their family members.
The operation of business and industry across various sectors must respect human rights principles. The principles of respecting human rights in business practices are outlined in the UNGP. UNGP: Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights serves as the main international standard for responsible business conduct, built upon three core pillars: Protect, Respect, and Remedy.
By supporting environmental campaigns that take advocacy steps to protect Indonesia's forests and vital natural ecosystems by promoting the respect and protection of human rights.
